IPod Backup and Update help!?

I am trying to update my iPod (2 years old now) from my new computer. iTunes is telling me that I will lose all of my purchased songs since I can't load them into my Library. If I back up my iPod, do the update, then restore my iPod from the backup, will I still have all of my purchased songs?
